We started out this week by going to Farnsley Middle School
a couple times to judge some of the items for the fair. There were various
different projects there from painted mask, to photography, to black and white
sketches to sewing projects. Some of the projects looked so good I was
surprised a young kid was capable of such work. Then, the crem de la crem
happened… It was Miss Ashley’s birthday! We celebrated by going out to her
favorite, Japanese, and then painting at Uptown Art. It was a beautiful
birthday for a beautiful lady.
Next
Miss Ashley had a combine presentation with Miss Whitney from Franklin County
for all the Friskies about Health Rocks. The Franklin County Inter, Lauren,
were able to help out a little, especially when it came to handing out the
materials. We were able to do a few activities with the audience that we did
with the kids back at Blake Elementary, and let me just tell you, that was
sight to see. The balloon activity was hilarious, and I could tell the adults
were having a good time as well. Miss Ashley and Miss Whitney did a great job
presenting and giving them a full idea of what Health Rocks is all about.
The
rest of the week went by quickly because we were so busy at the office getting
ready for camp. I had to pick up our T-Shirts for Week 1 and Week 2 and sort
them and I also went to the Wesley House Community Center on Preston Highway located in Louisville. It's a community center with a large hispanic population and
I was able to work with another agent in the office, Ms. Jeanie and teach the kids the different food groups and some things about healthy eating. The community center has been the best for me so far because I've been able to utilize my Spanish and talk with the kids. This community center has become a large part of my special project, and I have made a couple of fact sheets and brochures all in Spanish about 4-H for the kids to take to their parents.
That weekend we had the
4-H Jefferson County Fair at Farnsley and that was pretty awesome. The kids were
able to participate in a Fashion Revue and a Variety Show where they showed off
their clothes that they sewed themselves and some talents that they possessed.
There was a livestock part also, which consisted of chickens and rabbits. There
was even a room for the kids and parents to make cupcakes in and there was a
snow cone machine as well. It’s safe to say the kids definitely had more than
enough snow cones that day. All in all it was a great fair and it’s good
knowing there’s something like this for the kids in our community to display
their talents and skills.
