Breckinridge County Fair, weeks 9 & 10

This week starts off our County fair. The first morning we set up and decorated our 4-H showcase for the exhibits. We held check in, the first two days of fair and received many items. We invited Carole Goodwin, Meade Co. 4-H agent to judge for us this year. The 4-Her's did very well and put a lot of hard work in to the exhibits. The hams were previously judged and brought over to be hung in our show case latter that day. Alex and I were the merchant building "bouncers" the first night keeping an eye on the 4-H and homemaker exhibits and meeting with the community as they come to view the exhibits.

We hosted all of our livestock shows in two days and concluded with a cookout the first night and our Auction the Second night. Our first show rabbit, poultry, goat and steer were judged. That night 4-H had a cookout for the exhibitors and 4-H families with food provided by the 4-H council, Cattlemen's and parents. The second day was the Swine and sheep show. After gathering the results the Auction book was made and I finished the Grand and Reserved posters to be displayed at the auction. Our action followed that night raising over $21,000 above market value.

During fair week we also had Jr. Master Gardener. At this meeting we learned about critters in our garden. We also had a visit from Franklin and Rabbit. We made scarecrows to get rid of anything that might want a snack from our garden and read a story. We weeded our garden and looked for bugs that might attack our plants.

At the end of the week was fair pick up day and everyone came to collect the exhibits and prizes. We emptied the merchants building and stored the equipment into the extensions storage building until next year. I also took the hams back to the ham house to hang until state fair. After the fair we put the pictures together to get the thank you letters together for the buyers. We checked out the animals were picked up and we cleaned up the fairgrounds.

The next Monday was back to normal as usual. I started working on my Intern video, and trying to fit all these wonderful experiences into 3 minutes was very difficult for me. So i decided to make a video for my county as well to incorporate all the great memories and experiences I had this summer. Alex and I traveled to Meade County office to help out with Lydia and Carole's workshop day. It was a very busy day with many things to do. The 4-Her's made woodworking projects, tie dye, candle holders, message boards, duck tape art and much more.

Everyone in the office gathered to help put on a Field day with our Natural Resource Agent, Carol Hinton. Our county hosted the Kentucky Forage & Grassland Council Field Day at the Extension office and Burke Farm. Burke's farm is a sixth generation farm focusing on cattle, hay and row crops. First we were introduced to the Layout of Farm Grazing System by Dr. Jon Burke. The we loaed a bus and from the office and headed to the farm to meet with speakers. We were introduced to stockpiling for fall and winter pasture by Dr. Garry Lacefield, UK Extension Forage Specialist. Establishing Hay & Pasture - New Fescue by Dr. Ray Smith, UK Extension Forage Specialist. "Getting the most from your Grazing Program" by Ken Johnson, UK Extension Ag Agent, Monroe County.Nutrition, Feed Rations/Mineral by Dr. Roy Burris. Then we traveled to the feed lot and discussed vaccinations with Dr. Jon Burke, Veterinarian.A walking tour demonstration was provided to discuss Fencing Demo & Water System with Jeremy McGill, Gallagher Fence Co. We ended the day with a meal prepared by Farm Credit of Mid-America, the Extension agents and Breckinridge County Cattleman' Association.

Our Career Club met and traveled to different businesses in their interest fields. We visited with the Board of Education, USDA, Farm Credit of Mid-America, Burke Veterinary Service, and Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary. The 4-Her's leaned about the different careers and the path they would need to take to have that career with internships and education. I finished out the day a 4-H puppy pals preparing for state fair.
