Construction, Hams, and a Pig

With the growth of the 4-H program as well as a large Ag program, the Henry County extension office needed to grow. The addition of an extra room to the back of the building, as well as expanding the conference room and kitchen, will allow for a greater capacity in the office. Construction started a few weeks ago, but it really kicked into gear this week. The conference room, kitchen, and meeting room have been walled off on the backside while the crew tears down the wall and builds outward. The office has been pretty loud since then. Also, some unplanned demolition happened, when our roadside sign got hit by a car. The construction is planned to be finished in mid-October, which is after my internship ends, but fortunately I’ll still be around the county to see it.
A problem arose when the hams in the ham house behind our office started showing discolored spots and callous like textures on them. The ham project was something that I was involved with when I was a 4-Her, so I have some knowledge in the matter. After looking over everything I could; probing the meat, checking for bugs, making sure the fans were working properly; I decided that it was outside of my knowledge. Hopefully I’ll learn what is going on with these hams when a specialist comes and checks them out next week. Oh, and today, I got bit by a pig; twice.
