Traveling and Rural Sociological Society

The past two weeks have included a variety of tasks and experiences. I have found that interning for a specialist, rather than an agent, has allowed me to work with many people and have a different take on Extension at the University Kentucky.

Last week on Tuesday, I traveled with Lori Garkovich to Carter County. There was a lunch meeting at a local pizza restaurant to discuss drug problems in the county seat, Grayson. There were people representing a variety of the city's entities. The judge and several of the prison's officials were in attendance. It was easy to see the passion that these community members for improving their current drug situation. During the meeting, Lori lead discussion and I took notes. It was an enlightening experience for me because I was able to see collaboration in a community and also see Lori as a mediator for discussion. It may have been a long day of driving, but the experience was well worth the miles.

Another task I worked on last week was double checking data research for the Rural Sociological Society (RSS). Julie Zimmerman and I were doing so research and record keeping of women involved in RSS and Extension through the years. It was very interesting and fit well with my detail-oriented personality.

Last week I also worked with Stacy Vincent. I created an exam for him concerning introduction of communication in agriculture. It has encouraged me to take an ag-comm class in the future if at all possible.

This week, I judged the Agroscience Fair for the FFA Convention. I was responsible for the four women competing in Division 2 of Social Sciences. It was interesting to hear their research and great their presentations. I enjoyed seeing all the presentations in the five areas of study for the fair. The FFA members were clearly proud of their work and eager to know who would advance to the National competition.

I look forward to what I will be doing the rest of the summer.
