Irrigation Project Underway!

Hey Everybody!

I am so excited to tell everyone that my irrigation project is finally in full swing! After many preparations for it the last several weeks, I am finally out in the field working on irrigation systems.  In order to get ready for the irrigation project, there were many things that had to be put together, set up, and done throughout the fields. Throughout the summer I will be collecting a variety of soil and tissue samples, along with reading rain gauges and tensiometers that are set up throughout the fields.

I am excited to see the results that we will receive from this project.  By having the results from this project, farmers will be able to have a better understanding on irrigation systems and how to run them throughout the growing season of row crops.  I will be presenting the results of this irrigation project at the Corn, Tobacco, and Soybean Field Day in Princeton, KY at the research center.  I am hoping that by doing this I will be able to reach out to specialists and farmers so that they will be able to compile this information into a handbook for farmers not only throughout the state, but also across the nation.

Presenting this information at the Field Day helps me accomplish one of my goals that I had coming into this internship.  I want to be able to help make a difference in agriculture and help farmers produce the best yield possible and this project is perfect for those two things.  I am excited to see what is to come in the next 6 weeks of my project.  I am happy to be able to do what I love everyday of the summer and also receive a great education while doing it! Hope everyone is having a great summer and I hope you are having as much fun as I am!
