Busy, Busy, BUSY!!!

Things here in Garrard County are busy, busy, busy.....BUT we are having a blast. In the last 2 weeks we have started full swing into our day camps! On Thursday June 4, I held our first day camp which was Dirt Days! We had 35 kids and 5 volunteers show up to have a great day planting and painting. Each child took home a vegetable garden bucket that had a variety of tomatoe, pepper and broccoli plants that they had planted. Also the kids planted 3 Vinca plants of assorted colors in a hanging basket. After lunch was served, the students planted a red bagonia in a terra cota pot then painted the pot with different designs and patterns. Along with having a good time in learning to plant, the kids also learned what is essential care for the plants they planted to survive and produce.
On Tuesday June 4, we were back at it with more kids at the office for a "Trashy Craft Day". 25 kids joined us to take a small trashcan/wastebasket and refinish it to give it a cool new look in their bedroom. For our day camp we chose to decoupage the trashcan with pictures from newspapers and magazines. Each child's trashcan looked alittle different. The kids really enjoyed this activity and loved how the can looked when they were finished.
With only a day to recover from "A Trashy Craft Day",  we began our 3 day Photography camp on Thursday. That day students arrived to the office about 9:00 for a full day of exciting lessons and picture taking. During the morning the students were shown proper techinques and ways in which they should take a picture. At lunch time, the students helped fix lunch. We had tacos and for dessert the students make shake-a-pudding. After we had cleaned up lunch, the kids were taken to the other meeting room where our teachers had a studio set up to teach the kids how to take studio pictures. They used the photographers camera to take pictures of their model (the other students). Friday night photography camp was held at the Patterson Farm here in the county. Students had many subjects available such as cows, horses, sheep, chickens, many flowers, tobacco & strawberry patches. We ended the night with a cook out. Today is our last day of photography camp. Today the students are going to edit and print their pictures and then learn how to frame or mount them.
Days that were not filled with day camps we were busy getting ready for the next. When we had time we have also been filtering through camp applications and awarding scholarships. We have been getting ready for our county fair which will be coming up at the end of the month. We even found time to fit in a few farm calls for farmers who had questions and even some who just wanted to check and make sure they were on the right track. As of now the crops are growing, fair entries are being made and we are having a blast here in Garrard County!!!
