These last two weeks have seemed like they flew by! I am having a blast and learning a lot at the same time. So far the words "No two days in extension are the same" is holding true!
Within the last two weeks we have been on three different farm visits. The first farm we visited was to look at sick strawberry plants. We took an abundance of pictures and a sample to send off. It turned out that the strawberries had common leaf spot. Then we went and visited a lady that had a tree that was ill. We had to suggest for her to contact the local forester to gain a more experienced opinion. The last visit we went on was to talk to a man about potentially getting goats. While talking with him we explained the different breeds, feed information, and other general animal husbandry information that may be useful for someone just getting into the business.
Last week I was asked to fill in for the 4-H Agent at the summer reading program. The theme for the reading program was Science. So we did three different science experiments with the kids. We made lava lamps out of water bottles, food coloring, and vegetable oil. We also let the kids do tornadoes in a bottle. The groups favorite experiment was mentos and coke.
We are all in planning mode currently for cloverbud day camp which is coming up in a couple days. This camp is geared for kids who are 5-8 years old. The theme for camp this year is water. We have many different activities and guest speakers planned for the kids.
On June 21st one of the projects I have been planning took place. We had a jackpot show for kids showing market goats in the surrounding area. There was around 40 kids show up with there projects. We had an entry fee of $10 which was paid back to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places of each class. There was over $400 in prize money be paid out. We had exhibitors from both Kentucky and Ohio Counties.
I am looking forward to what the next two weeks will have in store.
