Still raining? How about a field day!

These past few weeks we really haven’t been able to do a whole lot due to the large amounts of rainfall that we have been receiving. One day we went up to Lewis county for an agent training, which was very good me to see as it showed one aspect of what I would be doing if I was to get a job as an ag agent after I graduate. It was sort of like a business meeting where all the agents from the area gathered to discuss highpoints of their work and my boss, Kenny Seebold, gave a detailed run-down of different plant diseases showing up across the state. Another day late in the evening we attended a field day in Harrison County where there were different stations set up to talk to the farmers about different aspects of farming. Again I was with Dr. Seebold as we talked about plant diseases, mainly frog-eye and target spot in tobacco. Finally, a third field day that we have attended in the past couple weeks was held at the UK Spindletop Research farm in Lexington, Ky. This was for Phillip Morris International tobacco company and they led tours across the farm telling about the different tobacco studies going on there. My role on this day was to assist in a demo teaching how to calibrate a sprayer in order to know that you are spraying the correct amount of chemical on your crops.

Other than this, we have started spraying some of our test plots with certain treatments to follow the protocol sent out by the chemical companies that these tests are for.

Once we get out in the field again and are able to do something more interesting I will have a new, hopefully more interesting, post.
