Its Just the Beginning

Week 3 and 4 had a really good jumpstart full of events, fundraising, and community service. I met so many wonderful people from those who walked for Relay for Life, Golf Scramble, Teen Club, and Country Ham. Relay For Life was a great experience, I got to met so many different people who came together for a common interest. These people were here to support those who had or have cancer and those who may have lost a family member due to cancer. It was a beautiful event.

In my 3rd and 4th week I also got to meet the wonderful teens in Jefferson County that made up the
"JCrew". It is open to any youth between the ages of 14-19. They organized and complete community service and events for the entire year.

The participants are kids and there project is the cure a ham for the Kentucky State Fair. This process begins generally in the beginning of January. They are also required to do a 3-5 minute presentation.
Participants are judged at the State Fair on the quality of the speech and the ham. Winners at the State Fair could receive up to $750 for Grand Champions and $500 for Reserve.  Fayette County 4-H Country Ham participants are also eligible to sell their cured hams at the Fayette County 4-H/FFA Livestock and Ham Project Sale in September where hams usually sell for $200 to $300 each.  All participants are also eligible to compete for a $750 scholarship.
