Last Tuesday, the Shelby Co. Extension Office welcomed kids from all over to participate in "Kids in the Kitchen"--a program that encourages healthy living behavior such as regular hand washing and nutritious eating. Kids went from station to station, learning new skills to use in their kitchens at home, as well as a boatload of recipes to try out. Among other things, the kids got the opportunity to make whole wheat pancakes and made-from-scratch granola cookies. The experience really proved to be a fun one, not to mention educational! Toward the end of the program one child told me, "We have washed our hands a million times." Although a million was a stretch, it was that they got the point--always wash your hands!
I also got to try my hand in judging once again. Yesterday, we traveled to the Henry County fair in order to help extension agents there judge various entries. I gained a lot of insight on sewing and what is looked for in a quality product. It was really great to see people, who are masters in their craft, use their knowledge for the benefit of others. It was especially exciting to see so many entries from the 4H kids. One judge mentioned how great it was to know you could pull kids away from the television for a while and get them to focus on doing something more creative and productive. I couldn't agree more!
