Hi everyone!
The past two weeks of my internship have definitely been some of my favorites since being here. During the past two weeks I completed my specific project and participated in two 4-H summer day camps.
My specific project was a nutrition lesson to children aging from 9 to 18 years old. The lesson was " Eat A Rainbow," it was a general nutrition lesson over the easiest way to get most of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that you need for your diet. The children were taught the different ways that different colors of fruits and vegetables help keep their bodies healthy (ex. orange fruits and vegetables help eyes stay strong and healthy). The children were also given a chance to try at least one fruit or vegetable from each color group on their version of the Food Color Wheel. This lesson was completed on the first day of cooking day camp. During the rest of the week, the children were taught basic knife skills, how to combine dishes, and follow recipes by UK dietetic students following the Superstar Chef Program.
The following week was sewing day camp for children aging from 9 to 18 years old. The children learned how to hand-sew different buttons onto fabric, how to make an apron, and how to make a hat using a sewing machine. At the end of this week is a Kid's Day celebration for children before they go back to school. The extension office will have a booth at the celebration featuring information on 4-H, FCS, and Ag programs. To finish off the tenth week the Snap-Ed educators will have a booth at the Letcher County Farmer's Market featuring food samples and nutrition information to give out to locals.
