I can't believe this is already the 9th week into the internship! These past several weeks have been extremely busy, and my calendar tells me that it isn't going to be slowing down any time soon. Between camp planning, judging contests, teen conference, and getting ready for the fair, I haven't had much time to really sit down and think about how fast the summer is going by. I finally got caught up enough to let everyone know what is going on at the Harrison County Extension Office.
Harrison County took 10 4-Hers to the State Teen Conference held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. We had 3 members competing in the style review and everyone else had a great time learning leadership skills and meeting other 4-H members across the state in their workshops and tracks throughout the week.
The middle part of June seemed like a judging team marathon. On the 15th-17th we took 10 4-Hers to the State Livestock Judging Contest held in Richmond, Kentucky. It was the highest quality classes I have seen at the State Contest since I have been judging and helping coach for Harrison County, and many thanks to the new youth livestock coordinator, Steve Austin for that. Our junior, intermediate, and senior teams all had a pretty good day judging. Many of them placed in the top 10 individually in many different categories, and our junior team was 2nd overall and we had 2 seniors make the top 20 high individuals overall. It is great to see the hard work pay off for these young adults. The ones who maybe didn't do as well as they had hoped are looking forward to next year to redeem themselves and the ones who did well are looking forward to improving on their knowledge and keeping up their good work. On June 18th we took 4 young ladies to Lakeside Arena in Frankfort, Ky for the State 4-H Horse Judging Contest. This was all their first year judging horses and they all had a great time and learned more about horse judging and what to expect for next year.
The last week of June was spent planning everything for camp. We are excited to have one of the largest camping groups and Harrison County is taking 238 campers this year, which is also exciting! We will be at North Central the week of July 13th with Pendleton, Roberston, Fleming, and Bracken Counties. Our theme will be the Clover Games and we are anticipating having a lot of fun with that.
The Harrison County Fair will start at the end of this week, with the livestock shows being Thursday- Saturday and the rides and the rest of the fair activities will be the 13th-18th. We have a lot of fun events planned throughout the week, and it will definitely be a busy time for the Harrison County Extension staff.
I will have to let everyone know how the fair and 4-H camp go over the next couple of weeks. Don't forget to let everyone know about the lamb camp that will be hosted at the Harrison County Fairgrounds on August 1, 2015.
