Busy Summer!

This time around as an intern has become even better than last summer during my first year. I find myself more busy every week, and i have enjoyed all of it. June was jam packed with events all leading up to our Farm City Field day that was July 9th. I have been fortunate to add more tasks onto my list, and do these on my own. Gaining experience in and out of the office helps me gain responsibility with the agents.

June was filled up with various tasks that made every day different. Cattleman's meetings, Farm Bureau meetings, county fair judging, craft days, and UK training programs were just a few of the things i was able to take part in. One very interesting day was getting to go to the sheep unit on UK's farm to learn about starting and maintaining a herd. They offer different classes that cover everything there is to know about sheep. We were also able to attend the field weed training service that was offered. We saw first hand results on types of chemicals and their results on various types of crops. Hands on training works best for me and UK never hesitates to offer it.

The end of June was busier than i could imagine. We had to prepare for the Cattleman's Association beef show on July 4th, and Farm City Field Day on the 9th. Luckily, we had great weather for the beef show. There were a lot of people and animals show up that made the day worth it. Everyone seemed to be satisfied and everything went smoothly. It was great to end on a good note before going into field day. The week before field day and the beef show was a good test of responsibility since our agriculture and horticulture agent were both out at a conference. That let me deal with planning and people on my own. Everything turned out great!

Farm City Field Day takes a lot of planning and preparation. Its the biggest day of the internship because the agriculture agent is in charge of putting on the event. We had a great farm to have it at this year and had a lot of volunteers that were willing to help out. We gave out and estimated 900+ tickets, so we knew we were going to have a big crowd. Since field day was at a successful horse farm, we didn't think we would have a lot of manual work cut out for us, except we did. Most of you have probably had as much rain as we have here in Frankfort, and that caused a few problems for us. Thankfully the rain held off during the event and we had a great turnout and a lot of satisfied people. This year for me was a lot less stressful since i did not have a station where i had to speak to everyone. We are looking forward to next year!
